Stonewall DFL participates in each pride-fest around Minnesota. You may have asked yourself where does the term Stonewall come from?
The 1960s was a turbulent decade in U.S. history including the Civil Rights Movement, Counter-Culture and anti-war protests.
The Stonewall Inn, located in the Greenwich Village area of New York City was the site of the Stonewall Riots. In the early morning hours of June 28, 1969 police raided the Stonewall Inn and were resisted by Stonewall Patrons. For several nights the GLBT community resisted the police. These riots were the catalyst that sparked the modern day gay rights movement in the United States.
Pride Fests are held each year towards the end of June to honor the Stonewall Riots.
